Our success story

Both James Candler and Cameron Alexander were teachers working for the American Red Cross prior to the 2020 global pandemic. Due to the pandemic and its after-effects on the global economy, Red Cross decided to discontinue 75% of its instructors and reinvent the process of utilizing “Training Partners.” As a result of this, James founded JPC Health & Safety Training, LLC to serve as the original Southern Colorado (Colorado Springs and Pueblo) strategic partner to the Red Cross. We have been steadfast and expanding even during these difficult times globally and we find that the training we provide is as beneficial as ever during this time. Late into 2020 Cameron came back into teaching after working as both a Nurse and Paramedic to save lives during the pandemic. Cameron became the co-owner of the business and allowed to expand while continuing to work clinically. We leased our current location and have been providing high quality instruction on site ever sense. You may expect a variety of health and safety-related issues to be covered via our strategic partnerships and high-quality teaching methods. Our instructors all have valued experience that they bring to students and both owners have served in both the military and worked in the EMS (Emergency Medical Services) field and have hands on experience in the topics that they teach. To ensure that every student has the resources they need to succeed, we’ll work with them all, from the general public to medical experts. It’s our ultimate objective to ensure that each and every student is completely satisfied.

About James Candler

Experience: While in the Navy I learned the basics of leadership. After getting out I started a job in the hospitality industry as a relief manager and quickly advanced to the role as a general manager. Early in 1992 I went to Southwest University and became an EMT. My experience as a general manager played a pivotal role in my time as an NREMT/NREMT-I. After becoming a NREMTI for South Park Ambulance, I began teaching for the American Heart Association as a First Aid/CPR and First Responder Instructor, currently known as EMR (Emergency Medical Responder). It was during that time I developed my passion for training. In 2012 I began working for Allied Universal Security services Human Resources Generalist and then Account Manager. During my tenure (2012-2018) I reignited my passion and became an American Red Cross Instructor. I was given the task to head up the Emergency Response Team (ERT) partnering our Security Officers with key ERT members across five administration buildings, across four states with over 5000 tenants combined. Our primary focus was on leveraging building emergency procedures, medical layperson response, and ensuring business continuity. In 2018 I joined the American Red Cross as an Instructor. My tenure in EMS and the Private sector made me realize when emergencies happen, it is the actions of the first responders that can make the biggest impact on saving lives.

Coaching Experience: As a father, Navy Petty Officer 3rd class, EMS provider, and Private sector Leader I have been teaching many aspects of Health and Safety topics for 30 plus years. During that time, I have learned that individual growth and the growth of others is the recipe for success!

As far as my personal passions goes, I love my family. I have a loving wife, two wonderful daughters, and a beautiful granddaughter. I also love camping, hunting, fishing, and all aspects of wood working, from cabinet making to log furniture. It is fascinating to take a pile of logs or pile of boards and turning them into works of art.

I currently teach most of the Red Cross classes for JPC Health and Safety. I will also be expanding into ServSafe, and ERT (Floor Warden) training.

Licenses/Certifications: American Red Cross Instructor (First Aid/CPR/AED, Wilderness First Aid, and BLS), Babysitting, and Stop the Bleed, American Heart Association (AHA) Level 2 Instructor- Teaching Heartsaver and BLS Provider.

About Cameron Alexander

Experience: I have over ten years of healthcare experience starting with my career in the US Navy working as a FMF Corpsman. I spent most of my time enlisted in the navy with marines and had deployed twice. I became a veteran and took my experience from the military to become a Paramedic and recently a Registered Nurse. I currently work in Colorado Springs with AMR as a Paramedic part-time and work in the Denver metro area as an ER, ICU, and pediatrics nurse.

Teaching Experience: I started teaching during my military career as a TCCC (at the time called CLS for Combat Lifesaver) instructor and then BLS Instructor. I enjoyed it along with the education I provide while counseling patients, marines, and sailors that I decided to make a career of it. I worked for and became an American Red Cross Instructor with Red Cross training services and a CNA instructor with Interim Healthcare. I also started teaching science part-time to elementary and middle school students with a company called Science Mattes. I have been teaching well over five years now and have become an instructor trainer, swim instructor, and EMS instructor among other things. I still enjoy teaching and get a true sense of fulfillment from my work.

Education: I have a bachelor’s degree in Health Science from Purdue University Global (formally Kaplan University) in addition to an Associates degree in Nursing and Paramedic Training. I currently attend UCCS here in Colorado Springs studying and researching Biochemistry.

Interesting fact about me: I love camping and being outdoors. Every year for the past four years I spend a week volunteering at a Camp to help kids with medical needs here in Colorado. I am also proud of my accomplishment of having completed a dessert heat triathlon.

Hobbies: I love Science and at one point thought I would be an engineer. As a hobby I read about different discoveries in science just about every day. I am glad I get to use my knowledge of science to enhance myself as a teacher and clinician. I also say that teaching science to elementary kids is my “hobby job”.

Courses I teach: I can teach just about everything that we offer at JPC and administer most courses we offer. Specifically, I teach all our Instructor courses, Layperson First Aid/CPR, ACLS, BLS, TCCC, EMR, EMT, CNA, QMAP, Pet CPR, Stop-the-bleed, WFA, and Private Swim Lessons.

Catherine has about 6 years of teaching experience as an American Red Cross Instructor. She began her journey with the Red Cross in 2015 as a lifeguard so she could have a fun summer job. In 2018 while away at College at Western Colorado University earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Arts, she became an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor at the Gunnison Aquatics Center. She took a brief hiatus from teaching during the 2020 pandemic. When it was safe to return to the world of aquatics in 2022 I took over as Aquatics Director at the Pueblo YMCA. Catherine joined JPC Health and Safety in 2023 as an instructor, looking to kick off our aquatics courses in early 2024.
